Discover the Benefits of Japanese Pumice (Hyuga)

Japanese pumice, known as Hyuga in Japan, is a premium, naturally occurring volcanic product sourced from the southern region of Miyazaki Prefecture. This exceptional growing medium offers unique characteristics that set it apart from conventional pumice.

Why Choose Hyuga Over Regular Pumice?

    • Enhanced Softness and Porosity: Hyuga is slightly softer and more porous, allowing it to retain moisture while promoting excellent drainage.
    • Unique Sinking Quality: Unlike regular pumice, Hyuga will sink in water, reducing erosion and making it an ideal choice for sustainable gardening.
    • Neutral pH: With an essentially neutral pH of 6, Hyuga is suitable for a diverse range of plant species.

    Perfect for Various Plant Types

Japanese pumice is highly recommended for:

    • Rhododendrons (including Azaleas)
    • Orchids
    • General pot plants
    • Bonsai (a vital component of many bonsai mixes)

As noted by bonsai expert Michael Hagedorn, if there is only one soil component to use for bonsai, it should be 100% pumice.

    Versatile and Reusable

Hyuga does not break down under normal circumstances, making it easy to sift and reuse. To ensure plant health, a disinfecting treatment using Sporekill is recommended to minimize the risk of spreading any fungal or bacterial issues.

Hyuga can also be combined with other elements such as:

    • Akadama
    • Peat (no more than 20% of the total mix)

    Optimal Growing Conditions

The excellent drainage qualities of Hyuga are particularly beneficial for nurturing ailing trees back to health. For typical conditions, a ratio of 1:1 (akadama to pumice) is ideal. For plants that thrive in moister environments, simply double the quantity of akadama.

Unlock the potential of your plants with Japanese pumice (Hyuga) and experience the difference in growth and vitality!

    I recommend this product

Game Changing Substrate Additive for Haworthia

The use of Fine Pumice together with Fine Akadama has improved the root growth and health of my Haworthia significantly. The plants using this substrate look generally stronger than those using more conventional mixes. I have also had success with rooting and establishing other plants in pumice, and found it an excellent substrate for my more demanding Hoya species. I would recommend this product for anyone who wants to improve the health of their plants, and who wants to achieve rapid root growth for their cuttings.
